Al momento di formare una unione matrimoniale, due persone diventano qualcosa di più grande di ciò che una volta erano. Come alcuni dei firmatari in questi casi dimostrano, il matrimonio incarna un amore che può sopravvivere anche oltre la morte. Sarebbe fraintendere questi uomini e donne a dire che mancano di rispetto all’idea del matrimonio. La loro richiesta è che lo rispettano, lo rispettano così profondamente che essi cercano di trovare il suo completamento per se stessi. La loro speranza è di non essere condannati a vivere in solitudine, esclusi da una delle istituzioni più antiche della civiltà. Chiedono pari dignità agli occhi della legge. In forming a marital union, two people become something greater than once they were. As some of the petitioners in these cases demonstrate, marriage embodies a love that may endure even past death. It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage. Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves.
