Da sempre attiva nelle politiche ambientali per la salvaguardia del pianeta, Vivienne Westwood dichiara guerra al fracking e, alla guida di un carro armato, si dirige verso la la Witney Constituency Home di David Cameron nell’ Oxfordshire. Il Fracking è il termine inglese usato per definire la tecnica controversa della fratturazione idraulica, ovvero l’ hydraulic fracturing, inventata agli inizi del Novecento per estrarre gas naturale e petrolio dalle rocce di scisto (shale gas), cioè quelle presenti nel sottosuolo che si sfaldano più facilmente. La tecnica della fratturazione idraulica consiste nel perforare il terreno fino a raggiungere le rocce che contengono i giacimenti di gas naturale e successivamente iniettare un getto ad alta pressione di acqua mista a sabbia e altri prodotti chimici per provocare l’emersione in superfice del gas.

Ovviamente l’impatto sull’ambiente è impressionante per via dell’immensa quantità di acqua che deve essere usata per l’estrazione del gas causando ingenti sprechi ambientali, per l’utilizzo di sostanze chimiche potenzialmente dannose per la salute umana che potrebbero contaminare le falde acquifere presenti intorno all’area di estrazione e per la possibilità che esista una correlazione tra esso e il verificarsi di scosse di lieve entità.

Il governo britannico ha introdotto 27 licenze di fracking nel Nord dell’Inghilterra e nelle Midlands. Lo stesso Cameron ha però assicurato che l’area della Witney Consituency  (sua sede nella contea di Oxford), non avrà licenze per le trivellazioni anche se il territorio in questione  rientra nella zona rurale in cui il fracking e’ consentito.

La fondazione britannica CHEM ha segnalato ben oltre 38 sostanze chimiche nocive che con le trivellazioni sprigionano  nell’ atmosfera agenti chimici estremamente dannosi per l’organismo quali benzene, naftalene, metanolo, glicolo etilenico e formaldeide.

Alta preoccupazione desta l’azione che tali sostanze producono sui sistemi di controllo ormonale, influenzando negativamente la riproduzione, lo sviluppo neurologico e il metabolismo. Si può arrivare fino a gravi malformazioni dei feti, tumori, insufficienza respiratoria e malattie della pelle. La popolazione e’ solidale nella lotta contro il fracking, in tutto il Paese sono ormai più di 400 i gruppi organizzati nella protesta.

Vivienne Westwood ha dichiarato: “L’uso deliberato e sistematico da parte di Cameron di agenti chimici nocivi contro cittadini inermi, in particolare modo donne e bambini, ci ha portato a dichiarare “Guerra al Fracking”. I politici si comportano da criminali, è ora di cambiare! Cameron vuole portare alla resa i proprietari dei terreni e trivellare sotto le loro case.”

Venerdì 11 settembre 2015 Vivienne Westwood, alla guida di un carro armato, con  le attiviste di ‘The Nanas’ e  i loro nipoti, tutti muniti di maschere antigas, hanno marciato verso la sede della Consituency. Tina Rothery di The Nanas dichiara: ‘Il governo utilizza pratiche chimiche dannose che mettono a rischio le generazioni a venire. Vuole ribaltare la decisione che ha stabilito il fracking illegale nel Lancashire.  Dov’è la democrazia? E’ con profonda tristezza e rammarico che noi residenti, madri, nonne e bambini del Lancashire ci troviamo a confrontarci con ciò che può essere descritto solo come una dittatura. In una vera democrazia prima di tutto saremmo stati ascoltati  e non trascinati in questioni legali che non potremo mai vincere con avversari così potenti che ci schiacciano e azzittiscono. Noi gridiamo e ci uniamo in una comune dichiarazione di guerra al fracking perché, se non facciamo i giusti passi per proteggere noi stessi, il nostro governo  certamente non lo farà.”
